Der englische Ökonom David Ricardo stellte 1817 das Gesetz des komparativen Kostenvorteils auf. Es besagt, dass Freihandel für alle beteiligten Wirtschaftsakteure von Vorteil ist, wenn sich jeder Akteur auf die Produktion des Gutes spezialisiert, für das er einen komparativen Kostenvorteil bzw. den geringsten komparativen Nachteil hält.
